NMMC plans for digital classrooms; CSR initiative boosts education project

NAVI MUMBAI: NMMC has floated a tender for having 600 digital classrooms, mostly ninth and tenth standard. The tender did not get any bidder, but there were some inquiries as a digital classroom includes a kit to be prepared for audio-visual presentation of text matter of various subjects. The civic body is planning to extend the tender bid by another 15 days.

The total cost of the project is pegged at Rs 14-Rs 15 crore. The digital classroom is part of the state government curriculum and a German multinational adhesive company has also chipped in as part of its corporate social responsibility. While the NMMC’s plan to implement the project will take some time, the launch of the CSR initiative scheduled for Tuesday at one of the civic schools in Koperkhairne will ensure that digital classrooms start earlier.

NMMC education department told TOI, “We have signed an MoU with for the private initiative for three years. We will review the work annually.” The company has executed the education project through one NGO—EDREST.

Sandhya Kedlaya, head of CSR of Henkel Adhesives technologies India Pvt Ltd, told TOI, “We are providing the kit for 13 digital classrooms in seven NMMC schools and will also provide 27 computers.” The CSR initiative, said Sandhya, is for a total of 20 schools during the current fiscal. Apart from NMMC, the education project includes civic schools of Thane corporation as also Zilla Parishad schools in Kurkum and Jejure near Pune.
