Nagpur: Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has prepared a plan to light up all its buildings and gardens with solar power. The decision was taken after the success of solar power project at NIT’s main administrative building at Sadar.

NIT chairman Ashwin Mudgal, also district collector, told TOI it will be a major step towards eco-friendly environment. “NIT had installed solar power generation system at its main administrative building in September last year. Majority of the total requirement is met through solar power. Also, NIT is making profit from the project by saving on power bill, he said.

NIT had installed the system at the main administrative building at a cost of Rs36.60 lakh. Total 194 solar panels were installed on the roof of the building. The civic agency thus saved power bill of Rs24 lakh between September 2017 and June 2018. NIT would recover all its remaining expenses by saving on power bill in the next few months.

Under the central government’s Model Solar City Project, the NMC had installed solar power system at its main administrative building and four zonal offices a couple of years ago. This pilot project was a big success.

Now, the NMC has floated expression of interest to light up all its administrative buildings, libraries, street lights, water pumping and treatment plants with solar power. Plans are afoot to generate a whopping 24,000kW (20MW) solar power with an investment of around Rs300 crore.
