Alkem Foundation Partners with IIT Bombay to Establish India’s First Research Centre for Immunotherapeutics and Regenerative Medicine

Alkem Foundation, the social responsibility division of Alkem Laboratories Ltd, has announced a landmark collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to set up an advanced research facility dedicated to immunotherapeutics and regenerative medicine. Under this partnership, the Foundation will finance the creation of the Alkem Centre for Advanced Research and Development of Applied Immunotherapeutics and Regenerative Medicines, which will be housed within IIT Bombay’s campus. This initiative marks India’s first industry–academia collaboration in biomedical innovation through the CSR route, reinforcing both institutions’ shared vision of advancing scientific discovery in complex disease areas with limited treatment options.

Alkem Foundation has committed to allocate 20–25% of its total CSR spending over the next seven years to establish and sustain this centre. The facility will serve as a multidisciplinary hub bringing together expertise in biomedical engineering, biosciences, and translational research to develop innovative, affordable, and scalable therapies.

The new centre will focus on cutting-edge domains such as cell and gene therapy, immuno-engineering, regenerative biology, and biomaterials, while fostering emerging research in gene editing and advanced therapeutic delivery systems. It will also act as a platform for training clinician-scientists, nurturing biotech entrepreneurs, and enabling start-ups, thereby strengthening India’s translational research ecosystem in life sciences.

Madhurima Singh, Executive Director and Chairperson of the CSR and Sustainability Committee, Alkem, said “Scientific progress is essential to addressing unmet healthcare needs. While CSR initiatives in India often focus on service delivery, we believe supporting research is equally vital. Through this partnership, Alkem Foundation aims to promote innovation in immunotherapeutics and regenerative medicine, enabling India to develop affordable and accessible treatments for the future. IIT Bombay’s world-class expertise makes it the ideal partner for this transformative journey.”

Professor Shireesh B Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, added “Our collaboration with Alkem Foundation strengthens the bridge between scientific research and clinical application. By combining our academic excellence with Alkem’s industry experience, this centre will enable pioneering discoveries and accelerate the development of therapies that improve healthcare accessibility and self-reliance in India.”

The Alkem–IIT Bombay Centre will build on the Institute’s strong foundation in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and data-driven health sciences, creating a unique ecosystem for innovation, research translation, and skill development. It will draw mentorship from IIT Bombay faculty, Alkem experts, and international advisors from leading global institutions.
