Seattle businesses now have a new, sustainable option for deliveries, with the launch of the Commercial E-Cargo Bike Program.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional delivery vehicles like cars, vans, and trucks.
The Seattle City Council paved the way for this program in September 2025 by passing legislation that recognized commercial e-cargo bikes as a legal vehicle type and authorized SDOT to permit their curbside parking. This move supports the city’s growing network of bike lanes and encourages businesses to adopt more sustainable delivery methods, according to SDOT.
E-cargo bikes, which are zero-emission vehicles, can help reduce delivery costs, navigate through traffic and congestion more efficiently, and align with both company and city sustainability goals, according to SDOT.
The program, which is now accepting applications for e-cargo bike permits, allows businesses to integrate these electric cargo bikes into their logistics and delivery operations, transportation officials said.
With a commercial e-cargo bike permit, businesses can operate these bikes on roadways and in protected bike lanes, park in designated curbside loading and parking spaces, and receive personalized support and guidance from SDOT staff.
KOMO has reached out to local delivery-based businesses, including Amazon, UPS, and Uber Eats, to see if they plan to apply for the permit.
A spokesperson for Amazon said they did not have any updates to share on whether they plan to apply for the permit. KOMO has not heard back from UPS or Uber Eats.
