It aims to train 30,000 women in job-oriented skills across 100 Gram Panchayats

In a bid to transform the economic landscape for women in rural Karnataka, the state government is rolling out the Savitribai Phule Women Empowerment Scheme, which aims to train 30,000 women in job-oriented skills across 100 Gram Panchayats.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge said that the program focuses on setting up Women Skill Development Centres in selected villages, where women will receive training tailored to their aspirations and interests.
As part of the scheme, 100 centres will be established—87 from 29 districts (with 3 Gram Panchayats selected from each district), 7 from Belagavi, and 6 from Tumakuru. These will function as Savitribai Phule Women Skill Development Centres, aimed at delivering practical, employment-focused training in partnership with the Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood.
According to the minister, each centre will target training for 300 women, adding up to a total of 30,000 beneficiaries. The women will be trained for self-employment opportunities through the State Skill Development Corporation, RUDSETI/RSETI institutions, and other technical support agencies (TSAs). The government also plans to connect trainees with banks and provide them with follow-up support to launch their ventures.
Highlighting the need for the initiative, Kharge noted that many women in rural areas are unable to earn a sustainable income from agriculture and are seeking alternative livelihoods. With limited access to employment-linked training programs, there is a pressing need for such centres within Gram Panchayat jurisdictions.
The minister said the scheme is part of the state’s budget announcement and is intended not just to equip women with skills, but also to unlock their potential, boost productivity, and help them achieve economic independence and self-reliance.
